12 Hours of Cranky Monkey

So this was my first outing with the brothers and sisters of Frank Zappa Kappa and let me tell you we roll deep and strong. The crew rolled in on Saturday and went for a little preride. we ran into a small hurdle when Tom took a spill and went to get checked out at the hospital. still he came back like a trooper and ran the base camp with Meagan and somehow kept track of us all.
the teams filtered out like this Wes and Peaches rolled in the open duo category winning the whole thing with 14 laps and Wes taking the fastest lap of the day not too far behind them was the duo from far off lands taking second that team was made up of Blair and Jan. Amy and Jamie took the Coed Duo. Mayhew and Etown layed it down in the Single Speed Duo and won beating out the 1-2 punch of Buddy and Bob. Fitzy rolled to a solid 5th place in the Single speed solo. and Fat Marc, Chunky Monkey and Rotten Rob took a solid second in the three person team. finally came the solo male category with Andrew taking 5th after a double flat on the last lap and i got the win.
The race was rather deceptive with the climbs i was excited about becoming the things i would dread later in the race. I started out strong only to find i was in third place after two laps. I thought i was doing better than that but decided it was best to settle in and see how things played out. My third lap I passed one of the other solo riders on the side of the trail with a mechanical. Then at the end of lap four i saw a kid struggling on the last climb barely able to pedal. turns out the kid had killed himself in the first few laps and blew up bigger than shit. I saw him come into the pits and collapse on the ground.
So i kept plodding along until the end of lap five when my calves started to cramp as well as my feet. i swept into the FZK compound and Tom worked some magic on my legs. after that i was back on the course and rolling hard with a little stomach trouble. turns out my body has trouble digesting 6 or 7 hours worth of constant energy food, who knew. i quit taking on the energy food switched to some good old PB&J's, beef Jerky and water.
Lap nine i came back around and started to roll again cranking out a couple of fast laps with no pit due to the fact i thought i was back to second place. Turns out i was just chasing myself. I came into transition with seven minutes to spare so i had to make the call on whether to go out for lap 11 or just call it a day. i opted out of number 11 to find i had won ten laps. I must say that that was one of my better choices on the day. I came into the FZK compound and totally shut down. it happens to me after everyone of these things and every time these guys nurse me back to health it is great.
I have nothing but love for the whole FZK crew they give endless support and tons of moral boost. every time one of the crew would pass they would hold up for a minute chat with me for a bit and give me a little bit of a boost. Fatmarc even accused me of being a Zombie at some point which just goes to disprove one of his theories on Zombies being that bikes make a great escape tool. cause zombie or not i could not escape that damn course.
The whole weekend was a lot of fun from Rotten Rob enlightening kids that the stork in fact did not bring them to the endless ribs on Matt's new nickname Peaches. and the fact that we stormed the podiums taking home almost every class for the weekend and putting even more fear in the hearts of Virginians when they see the FZK armada steam into town. i am a proud new member of this community and couldn't be happier.
